We hear so much about eclipses, and some of us have even seen a solar or lunar eclipse. What is actually happening during these events that can have such a strong effect to our lives? An eclipse is a total or partial obscuring (or interception) of a light between two heavenly bodies. For either a solar or lunar eclipse to occur, the transiting Moon must conjoin either the lunar north or south node (the karmic points) at the time of the New Moon or the Full Moon.
What does a Solar Eclipse mean and how does if affect you? It is generally agreed that the house and sign where the Eclipse occurs indicates the area of life that may be affected. Another influence is whether the eclipse makes aspects to any other natal planets. If it does, the effects of the eclipses may be intense and prolonged. Solar Eclipses represent new beginnings.
A Solar Eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth and partially or fully blocks out the sun’s light. During a total solar eclipse, when the Sun is viewed from the exact location on the Earth, day turns into night and the Moon’s shadow races across the earth and sweeps out a path that is never more than approximately 150 miles. This celestial event typically lasts only a few minutes, but can, at times, continue for more than seven minutes. When the Moon’s shadow is not quite large enough to completely cover the Sun, and the Moon looks like a black circle surrounded by lighted, flared corona, this is called an annular eclipse. Solar Eclipses can only occur when a New Moon is within 18 degrees. 31 minute orb of the south node (lunar node). This happens about two or three times a year.
In any given year, the Sun crosses over the lunar north node, and then six months later, over the lunar south node. This depicts the beginning and ending of a karmic cycle. “Eclipse seasons” are about 36 days long, but they can occur in any month of the year because of the retrograde motion of the nodal axis. In most years, two sets of eclipses, in different astrological signs, will occur. A New Moon solar eclipse preceded or followed by a Full Moon lunar eclipse with a 14 day spread. This year a solar eclipse in Pisces on March 19th, was preceded by a lunar eclipse in Virgo, on March 3. Six months later a Solar Eclipse in Virgo on September 11th, is preceded by a lunar eclipse in Pisces, on August 28th. Each eclipse is visible in only a narrow “eclipse path” on the earth’s surface. Some people believe that the eclipse location depicts the area where the karma or “bad luck” will occur. It is best to know what each kind of eclipse means.
In general, a Solar Eclipse introduces matters, events, circumstances and situations that you have not consciously thought about. You’re called upon to think about your attitudes and to engage our awareness concerning matters related to the particular House where the eclipse falls in your personal birth chart. A solar eclipse marks a turning point in your life, as it opens the door to new beginnings and opportunities that come your way. The actions and decisions of others may force you to make changes you resist, most likely for the wrong reasons. If the eclipse Sun is on the same side of your chart as the lunar north node, the issues that come about will be new ones. If the eclipsed Sun is on the opposite side of the lunar north node, it is probable that you will be dealing with reevaluation of already established issues.
