Lose Weight with Whole Body Vibration

by Becky Chambers, BS, MEd

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is a revolutionary new body, mind, and spirit exercise system. Even if all you do is stand on the vibrating plate, it helps you to lose weight by speeding up your metabolism, balancing hormones, increasing energy, elevating your mood, and strengthening muscles. It sounds too good to be true, but research shows increased weight and fat loss with WBV, along with many other benefits. My experience over the last ten years is that WBV is a huge plus in any weight-loss program.

When you stand on a vibration plate, you can feel the vibrations going through your body with a sensation similar to a massage. It seems simple, but every cell and molecule in your body vibrates, leading to a cascade of body-wide effects. Working out on a powerful version of these machines for ten minutes gives you the benefits of one hour of conventional weight lifting. This includes increased muscle strength, bone density, flexibility, coordination, balance, and weight loss. These revolutionary benefits are why WBV is used by NASA and the astronauts, elite athletes, and millions of enthusiasts worldwide.

WBV can also induce several hormonal changes that help you lose weight. Cortisol levels decrease, which lowers stress and promotes fat burning. Testosterone goes up, which has been shown to help turn fat into muscle and increase energy levels in both men and women (with the added benefit of improving your sex life!). Human growth hormone (HGH), our major repair and anti-aging hormone, also increases. This promotes healing of all parts of your body, including joints. With greater energy and mobility, you will be able to exercise more.

Just as important as the physical changes are the beneficial effects of WBV for your mental state. Targeting the same neurotransmitter in the brain as antidepressant drugs, such as Prozac and Wellbutrin, WBV rapidly raises serotonin levels, improving mood, sleep, and self-confidence. Everybody knows that to lose weight they should eat well (healthier choices as well as less food) and exercise more; the problem is actually doing it. WBV helps you be in that calm and relaxed but energized mental state where you can focus and achieve your goals.

A 2010 study of sixty-one overweight and obese adults saw significant weight loss with a combination of WBV and diet, with the best long-term results obtained for those participants combining WBV, aerobic exercise, and diet. Their conclusions were that “WBV training may have the potential to reduce VAT [i.e., fat] more than aerobic exercise in obese adults. . . . Only Fitness and Vibration [participants] managed to maintain a weight loss of 5% or more in the long term.”[ii]

For myself, WBV has been an important part of keeping a weight loss of eighty pounds off for many years. Beginning when I was a child, and continuing for thirty years, I suffered from chronic, sometimes severe, depression. Early on, I developed addictive and emotional eating behaviors, and, by my teens, I had become wildly bulimic, a problem that would dog me for the next twenty-five years. By my twenties, I weighed two hundred pounds and had a host of health issues.

WBV has been an important part of my recovery, and I have many clients who find it significantly helpful for losing weight, but I recommend that people use WBV with caution if they have health issues. WBV has very powerful systemic effects, including intense detoxification. This is good, as toxins in your body contribute to many issues, but detoxification can also be stressful for the body. If you have health issues (and significant weight gain is often a sign that something in your body, mind, or spirit is out of balance), you should consult with your doctor and start with just one minute of WBV on a gentle machine. Let the good vibrations help you heal your body, mind, and/or spirit, and that will help you to lose weight.

I am very happy to report that the combination of WBV, aerobic exercise, good nutrition, and homeopathy (energy medicine) has helped me to heal, lose those eighty pounds, and keep it off for the last thirty years. I still like to eat, and I have a very healthy appetite, but my weight is stable, my mood excellent, and I have a passion to share with the world the gifts that have helped me so much.
