Sharing A Love Song to God

by Sharon Hilchey

It was a wonderful day on our girlfriend’s weekend in Maine when my cell phone rang. We had just arrived at our destination, so I stayed in the car while my friends went on ahead. My brother, who rarely calls, greeted me with a quiet voice asking how I was. I gave a brief reply because I knew something was up; he then gave the reason for his call. His 20-year-old son was in a coma and might not survive from an accidental fall.

I was stunned.

After some years of study in my spiritual path, Eckankar, I’ve learned I could be most supportive to my brother and his family by just listening to him and my own inner guidance. To center myself I sang the HU (pronounced hue), a love song to God. HU is an ancient name for God and can be sung by anyone of any faith to connect with divine love, heal the heart, and find inner calm. I realized I needed to be available but not push my beliefs.

When my girlfriends returned to the car after their tour, I gave them a short version of what happened. We sat in the car, and after a brief description of the HU, we sang together. I was so grateful for their loving support.

A few days later my brother called and asked if I would share my spiritual beliefs about life and death with a small group of family members. Sadly, his son passed on. We agreed on a time to visit.

Many years ago, my husband and I shared some of our experiences with Eckankar with my brother and his wife, but we had not talked much about it since then. Now, they were seeking. Their hearts were reaching out.

That night I chatted with my brother and some other family members explaining a bit about Eckankar, including my beliefs in reincarnation, the eternal Soul as a spark of God, and practices that bring me closer to God (like to HU Chant).

Our little group sang HU. Afterward, I asked if anyone had an experience to share. I heard my father’s voice saying, “He’s with me” and then his maternal grandfather saying, “I’m here, too” which gave us comfort to know that both grandfathers were guiding my nephew. Another person in the group said that she had a better sense of balance and clarity after singing HU; her emotions calmed.

A couple of days later, my brother invited me to talk privately; he wanted to know more about Eckankar. My brother asked for HU cards (“how to” instructions) to share with others.

What a privilege to share something so profoundly meaningful in my life with someone I love. In the ECK teachings, we aspire to serve life. It is my great privilege to serve and feel I have been given the gift of touching the heart of another Soul.
