Feng Shui - Q & A

by Aaron Lee Koch

HOUSE ON A STEEP HILL

Dear Practitioner,

I am building a home on a steep incline. Because the back slopes down sharply, there is no possibility of having a back door. Instead, there will be two doors opening onto the front porch. Is this a potential problem in terms of Feng Shui? The main door will be obvious as it is bigger and is flanked by two bay windows. I look forward to your response.

M.S., Wellsboro, PA

Dear M.S.,

I have a number of concerns about your new home.

The side of the house that has the most open overall view is called the "facing side". This takes into consideration two factors – the side that is most open to the outdoors (i.e. the side with the most doors and windows), and the side facing the most open outdoor space (i.e. a field, water, a wide street). In most houses, the "facing side" is the side with the main door, but this is not always the case. The side opposite the facing side is called the "sitting side". The sitting side of the house should have strong support. This support can be in the form of a gentle hill, or a row of tall trees, or even another house. From your description, I cannot tell if the facing side of your home is the front or the back. It is important that you determine which side is the facing side and then examine the opposite side, the sitting side, to make sure it has the necessary support.

Having a second door on the same side as the main door is not ideal. Nothing should detract from the prominence of the one main door. The fact, that in some homes the apparent main door is rarely used, has no bearing. A second door on the same side of the house as the main door can produce confusion and disharmony. Is it possible to put the second door on another side of the house, or maybe on a wrap around deck on the sitting side?

Be careful about the bay windows that flank the main door. If the bay windows are large and are close to the main door, they can easily detract from the door’s prominence. Large bay windows should preferably be at a distance from the door.

WHERE IS GOD?

Dear Practitioner,

I am dealing with a lot of problems and anxiety and my prayers are simply not answered. My mother had a hard life and ended up going insane and I have a feeling the same is happening to me. I used to be very religious, going to mass most every day, but even Mother Teresa wrote that she often felt distant from God. I have many people in my life but I am feeling very alone in a spiritual sense. I find myself constantly begging God and arguing with him, and I get back nothing. For all my prayers, things seem to get worse and worse. How can a person know if they are on the right path in life if God is totally silent?

Donna, New York, NY

Dear Donna,

Some people use the word "God", "god" or "goddess", others use "spirit", "higher power", or "the universe" The words do not matter. As long as the world keeps turning, god is not silent. This is because everything we experience is taking place in god’s consciousness, of which we are a part. Our world seems so vast to us, yet in the grand scheme of things, we are such tiny beings, living in a small country, on a tiny marble of a planet, in our "Milky Way" galaxy which is one of BILLIONS of galaxies. The vastness of everything is infinitely beyond our ability to imagine, and yet god encompasses all of it and more. I believe that we are all as much a part of god as a wave is part of the ocean. However, while god is pure perfect love, we each have the ability to stray off the path and think thoughts of fear, self-sabotage and negativity. Your problems need not be the terrible dilemmas that you perceive them to be – they are bits of erroneous thinking that can be changed by a change in thinking.

Here is an easy yet powerful way to pray that works for me – try it and see if it works for you. Visualize yourself as part of god’s creation and perfection and know that you are naturally guided to the degree to which you are open to being guided. That’s all. Try to focus on that simple visualization. If your mind turns to fear or negativity, simply go back to the visualization. No need to beg or argue. He’s right with you – it cannot be any other way. Be with him. No need to explain your needs. He knows before you can articulate them. The perfect love, that he is, is always with you. Simply be aware of it and allow it in. With this new awareness, wonderful things can happen. Let me know how it goes!

BROTHER NEEDS ASSISTANCE

Dear Practitioner,

I would like to activate my brother’s "love and romance" sector as he is not yet married. He is 36 years of age.

There is a girl who is interested in him. However, my brother is not interested in her. By activating my brother’s "love and romance" sector, would I also be "activating" his relationship with this girl? If that is so, then I don’t wish to activate my brother’s "love and romance" sector.

Could you please tell me how I could activate my brother’s "love and romance" sector, so that he meets someone new, if that is possible?

Best Regards, Amrita, India

Dear Amrita,

"Activating" your brother’s love and romance sector will have one effect only – it will improve your brother’s romance luck. What exactly that means for your brother is impossible to predict, but it will move things in a beneficial direction for all involved. If the girl interested in your brother is not good for him, then she would not represent improved romance luck, so do not be concerned.

Here is how to help your brother. Have him remove any pictures of single people from his home. In the southwest corner of his bedroom, hang 3 pictures of loving couples that he selects. They should be pictures of any couples whom he perceives as truly caring, mutually supportive and loving.

Make sure your brother’s bed is positioned so that it is comfortably accessible from both sides, representing symbolic openness to a relationship.

If your brother’s bedroom contains any of the following items, remove them: mirrors (especially if they reflect the bed), computers, exercise machines, work-related materials, water features or pictures of water.

Place a picture or statue of a rooster, peacock or phoenix in your brother’s living room. (Single men should do this. Single women should use a dragon image.)
