How To Stay Balanced When Change Rocks Your Boat

by Laura Norman

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one  that is the most adaptable to change.” – Charles Darwin

Change is a constant in our lives today. Many of our ancestors probably lived their whole lives in one village, never traveling more than a few miles from home and rarely meeting anyone from beyond their own and neighboring communities, doing the same work with the same tools for a lifetime.

Today, many of us move several times during our lives and work at many different jobs, where we are expected to adapt to new technologies and new demands on a regular basis. We come into contact with thousands of people and move in and out of relationships in ways that would have been unimaginable to our ancient forbears.
Our bodies can usually adapt to gradual changes, like the change of seasons. But sudden or life-changing events can be very stressful, especially those that ask us to step into the unknown. They often have deep emotional impact. The sudden loss of a job, a home or a loved one can have profound effects on our health and well-being. Even positive changes, such as a marriage, a new job and moving into a new home, create stress and can cause us to lose focus and weaken our immune systems.

How can we be ready for change when it comes? We need to take good care of ourselves. The key is to be able to stay healthy, balanced and in control of ourselves when change shakes our world. As a reflexologist, I have heard so many clients tell me how reflexology, and the other tools I give them, help them stay centered–physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually–through periods of challenging transition.

Reflexology helps your body self-cleanse, eliminate toxins and strengthen your immune system. It encourages the release of endorphins, your natural "feel-good" hormones. Clients with anxiety, insomnia, weight issues, depression and many other issues that life changes bring about report significant relief and lasting improvement after reflexology sessions. The deep relaxation you experience during and after a reflexology treatment is a great time for visualizations and affirmations that help you successfully navigate the changes around you, e.g., "I move safely and joyfully through the flow of the Universe."

When change rocks your boat, sessions with a professional reflexologist can help you access your inner power and provide tools that help you remain calm and focused. Classes are also available to learn reflexology techniques to help yourself and others. My book, Feet First, gives an easily-mastered reflexology routine you can apply to boost your immune system and feel renewed—as well as routines for specific life-cycle changes such as adolescence, pregnancy and menopause.

You have the power within you to cope with life’s changes. Reflexology is a great resource you can use to draw on your inner strength to stay balanced in a constantly changing world.
