Divine Wisdom From Michele Livingston

by Michele Livingston

Dear Michele,

Your column has helped me with many different issues in my life and I look forward to reading it every month. I have a couple of things to share and want to ask you a couple of questions. First, our daughter Angela has a very severe form of cerebral palsy. She is now 21 years old, totally bedridden and completely dependent on us. Angela is a joy though to all who know her, and her smile can light up a room! I’ve tried to figure out why she has this condition, because it’s nowhere in my or my husband’s family history. The doctors said that she could have developed it when I had a cold during pregnancy, and my husband feels it could have come from his blood pressure medication at the time. So we have some guilt about Angela’s cerebral palsy and I also worry about who is going to take care of her when we’re passed on. We don’t want her to end her days in a nursing home or state facility all alone. Since her birth we have become very involved in fund-raising for UCP (United Cerebral Palsy), and my husband is a state past president of the organization. How did she contract this condition and will she be all right when we’re gone? Thanks so much and Blessings,

Joan M.

Hi Joan,

I receive lots of e-mails and letters each week for this column and I chose yours because there are deep spiritual principles behind this situation. First of all you must release any guilt or blame attached to Angela. These are powerful negative emotions that can pull you and your husband down on all plains of existence (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual). Her condition is not DNA or genetically linked. She "chose" this disabled state to spiritually learn and grow. This is a "soul agreement" between you and her. Angela incarnated to learn patience and self-discipline, for I’m sure she sometimes becomes very frustrated with her cerebral palsy. This condition is also teaching your family patience, strength and faith. Her disability is causing much public attention and awareness; and by your fund-raising efforts for UCP, you’re touching thousands of other lives. Have compassion, but do not pity her. Again, she is not a sacrificial lamb, but an old soul with courage – who chose to advance rapidly through choosing a disability. Remember how Helen Keller – who was deaf, mute and blind – gave the world inspiration and hope through her life and writings. There are no accidents with a person’s situation. Our souls choose a set of parents to learn and grow with, we choose our sex, date of birth, physical conditions and our time to exit or pass on. The human soul was created eons ago by an intelligent source of pure unconditional love and light, who we call the Father/Mother-God Creator. We are co-creators with the source, God, and have received a valuable gift – that of free choice and free will. So there are spiritual principles behind any disability. Each lifetime we select a soul lesson to accomplish or a virtue to become aware of. This is probably not the last curtain for Angela’s soul as she may choose to return to earth for more soul progression. She is a light filled "joy bringer" and even her name is angelic! A disabled child is not a guilt ridden punishment on a family, but a gift and blessing from God. Also, Joan, release worry about her future care. My angels tell me you and your husband have longevity; and if indeed she outlives you, there will be another, younger family member to step in to take care of her. Have the family member who is agreeable to this care give you their agreement in writing, and include it in both your wills. Thanks for sharing, Joan, and I’m glad my column has helped you over the years.

Blessings,

Michele

Dear Michele,

My daughter Brianna took her life when she was 17. She was always shy and the "peer pressure" of high school was just too much for her. You know the pretty, popular girls always got the attention. My daughter was sensitive, artistic and very special. I feel I might have done something wrong in raising her. Or maybe she just couldn’t cope with what she was dealing with at that age. As a mother, I’m just so desperate for any answers.

Please help!

Susan J.

Dear Susan,

It’s hard to lose a beautiful daughter, especially at a young age. You did not do anything wrong in regards to raising her or her suicide – so please release the guilt! It is hard in today’s society to measure up to the pressure placed on us from peer groups. The act of suicide is a very controversial subject. One side of the coin might say she was overly sensitive and would crack under any situation, and that suicide was a way out. The metaphysical, spiritual side may say it was her time to pass on, and it was her choice – God gave us all free choice and free will. I feel Brianna was not only special, but helped her peers to see something more deep and profound by her death – to look and evaluate their own lives and what life means to them. Remember, each suicide is a unique situation. We’re not condemned on the other side for it. It is very difficult to incarnate to this dense, third dimensional earth plane. We’re coming from the realms of love and light, into a world of crime, negativity and abuse. Although it is a beautiful world from a positive perspective, it can also try and test our constitutions, patience, and soul growth. Brianna will return to the earth plane with more confidence, strength and self assertiveness. This is a lesson she was here to learn. You were the vehicle to give her life, but she was the one to make a decision to terminate her life. Again, Susan, you are a good mother. She is safe in the light and love of God, and resting in peace. Be grateful for the life you gave her and know she loves you. Remember, on life’s journey there are mountains and valleys of shadows. Life goes on and you’ll meet her soul again and retain the momentum of your purpose together.
